Sexual Assault Awareness Month and How You Can Help

The goal of Sexual Assault Awareness month is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. YOU can be the person to help.  There’s a lot of information out there and it can be easy to gloss over and not really take it in, but we encourage you to really sit with this and take it in.

Sexual violence is any type of unwanted sexual contact, ranging from sexist attitudes and actions to rape and murder. Sexual violence can include words and actions of a sexual nature against a person’s will.

Sexual violence is preventable through collaborations of community members at all levels of society. This includes at home, in your neighborhood, school, faith settings, workplace, and anywhere people congregate. We all play a role in preventing sexual violence and establishing norms of respect, safety, equality, and helping others.

-Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted

-1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime

-Transgender students are at a higher risk for sexual violence.

The problem with statistics and long paragraphs and numbers it’s easy to lose sight of the very real horror. I cannot tell you how many people I personally know who have been a victim of sexual assault. I used to think that just happens to OTHER PEOPLE. Nobody in MY circle would do that, it’s for people NOT LIKE ME. But that’s a DANGEROUS thought and also happens to NOT BE TRUE.

It is OUR responsibility to help, whether that’s by spreading awareness, educating yourself to recognize the signs, training in self-defense, donating money or time, or anything you can do. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHERS. We cannot make the dangerous mistake of thinking that someone else is helping or will take care of this or that it’s not a problem or not YOUR problem.

You can continue to educate yourself at the National Sexual Violence Resource Centre.

You can donate to these organizations

You can learn self defense for free online here but I highly encourage you to find a local gym and try it out for yourself. It’s the best way to learn, it will empower you and some day may save your life or someone else’s.
